A Picnic in the Hen Garden

Sometimes you just have to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busy-ness that can consume our lives, so every once in a while I think it’s important to stop, get outside for some fresh air and spend time with loved ones. And what could be more perfect for doing just that than an impromptu picnic in the chicken coop (which I love to call my ‘hen garden’) with my little Misha.
We have over eighty chickens so it was really important that we had the perfect space for them to roam freely, lay their eggs and be happy. To us, our chickens are more than just a means to produce fresh eggs, they are our pets and we treat them like they are a part of our family. The girls love to feed the chickens in the morning and to collect their eggs. Because we have so many of them, there is always an abundance of fresh eggs on the farm that we eat for breakfast and use in our family’s recipes. We also send our eggs to the Yellow Green Farmers Market every week, where they are sold. All of the profits go to Blue Stallion Farm’s outreach program, Rayitos de Luz. Our girls bring in the eggs, pack them and then my husband delivers them to the farmers market. It’s such a great lesson for them to build something up, work hard taking care of it and then to give back.
This space is very special, as it was a present for my 40th birthday that my husband, Jimmie made for me. So any chance I get to spend here, whether it’s just a quick moment of gathering eggs in the morning or an afternoon spent with Misha arranging flowers, feeding the chickens and chatting away, I treasure every second of it. We hope that our little moment of rest and relaxation inspires you to do the same in your life.
